Employment History

Accenture, Warwick Sybase DBA January 2004 to January 2005

Working as the main DBA to the UK National Insurance Database(NIRS2). This was a 2 Terrabyte installation running Sybase 11.5.1 on HP Unix(10.20). DCE messaging and Encina transaction manager provided key components of the system. HP Omniback and Tivoli Messaging formed the basis of the infrastructure. The system contained information on 65 million accounts with up to 1.3 billion records. Up to 60,000 users accessed the system. I managed and performed two major application upgrades. The system was coming to the end of it's life on the current hardware and was to be passed to a new support contractor. A significant amount of effort was devoted to redistributing and resizing databases to prevent the system from filling the available server space. With the introduction of Real Time Pensions Forecasting this was completed with very small maintainance windows in a short timeframe. Other work completed included a scripted solution to rebuild the DR site and work on a single script solution to restore an entire tape backup which comprised of 54 tapes.

Landesbank Baden-Wurttemberg Sybase DBA Dec 01 to December 2002

Working as a shared resource DBA between a series of projects migrating to an E 10000 environment. The work involved building and administering test and UAT systems for applications.

Landesbank Baden-Wurttemberg Sybase DBA Aug 00 to October 2001

Employed as a DBA for a Kondor+ project, the team consisted of a mix of business and technical resources, designing a combined Kondor+ platform for 3 recently merged banks, based in Stuttgart. Target platform was a Sun E 10000, using Veritas Cluster Server and Volume Manager. Responsibilities included writing, documenting and delivering entire Sybase infrastucture and handover to production support depertment.

Natwest GFM/RBS Sybase DBA Sept 99 to July 2000

Working as a Sybase resource in the UNIX team providing second line support for circa 80 Sybase servers ranging from 11.0.3 to 12.0 mainly on Solaris but with approximately 6 NT servers. Provided solutions for transaction logging on the NT platform, basic Sybase auditing, including audit configuration, data collection and report presentation and implementation of a server monitoring system. Completed a project to upgrade the remaining 11.0.3 Servers to 11.9.2 prior to the termination of support of the older systems.
Deutsche Bank Sybase DBA Mar 99 to July 99

Working in the Y2k test laboratories, building images of production applications for test purposes. Maintaining all Sybase software on a central 'version server'.

Greenwich Natwest Bank Sybase DBA October 95 to December 98

I joined Natwest Markets as a contractor providing second line support to the UNIX Team looking after between thirty and eighty Sybase servers running on a Solaris platform. Utilized Solaris packages to distribute a suite of administration and start-up scripts to all servers to maintain consistency and to link in with the current infrastructure, based on Tivoli and Autosys. Developed and maintained an in house Sybase web site for the UNIX administrators, liaised with Sybase Technical Support on all problems. Extended the use of packages to the distribution of Sybase software.

I spent a year in the Projects Team looking at the Sybase infrastructure and it's use in the bank. Covering aspects such as new hardware and operating systems, current implementations, future requirements and security issues.

I was finally assigned to the banks Global Derivatives System(GDS) as their Sybase DBA supporting Development, System Testing, UAT and Production Systems in London and Tokyo as well as liaising with US support staff. This required working closely with development staff, the Project Manager and users. This involved the implementation of major application releases(Euro and Y2K) as well as OS upgrades and Sybase releases(11.0.2 to 11.5.2).
